Topic: SO2 Optimization in Sulphur Recovery Unit

Abstract: Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company (SATORP) is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and TOTAL. Its vision states “Leading producers of refining and petrochemicals” with passion to environment. SATORP holds ISO 14001:2015 certification and matured Environment Management System (EMS). SATORP has selected Modified Claus process followed by a Tail Gas Treatment (TGT) based on the RAR (Reduction, Absorption, Recycle) process to optimize SO2 emission in Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU). SO2 emissions were considered in our EMS aspect register as activities with control mechanism in SRU. The purpose of SRU is to recover liquid sulfur from hydrogen sulfide rich gases. The Sulphur Recovery Unit processes acid gases contain H2S and ammonia produced by the Amine Treating Unit and the Waste Water Stripping Unit. The incoming H2S is converted to elemental Sulphur. The Sulphur Recovery Unit comprised of three identical trains (U221/U222/U223). Each train has SRU and TGT unit. Environment, Operations & Process follows and monitors outlet SO2 emissions as per environmental management system at the stack outlet. Higher SO2 in stack outlet means lower sulfur recovery SO2 parameters from SRU/TGTU`s are monitored through continuous emission monitoring system which is showing a great improvement in term of SO2 emissions and this improvement as it is further far from regulation limits and the success of this achievement will be shown in the presentation.
